The goal of this site hopefully will be mostly informative for those interested in what is happening with the Cliff Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. While this site is in it's infancy I don't expect to be able to dedicate a great deal of time until the winter storms interrupt my ability to be outside doing productive things.

Training burn of January 31 went a little slower than expected....... The slabs of wood from Rogers sawmill did not burn well at all. Green wood is slow to start. Once it is seasoned for a while it will go much better. Here are some pictures of that training. It was a good practice of the portable pumps with slush on the surface of the North East cove. The floating strainer works well once the initial blast of slush is cleared from the lines.......

In the case of a sustained fire the Portland fireboat (Shown here) will respond. The fire boat's pumps are capable of pumping 7,000 gallons of seawater per minute. The water can be used to supply our trucks or if the fire is close enough to the shore they can apply the water directly with the massive water cannons shown on this picture.

Receintly Bob Howard, Casey Zuckerman, and Myself (Dave Crowley) spent a weekend at the Samoset Resort for the 18th annual EMS Conference. We participated in several courses that we believe will enable us to better serve the Cliff Island Community. I expected it to be a fun and productive weekend, and it far surpassed my dreams.

Here are some pictures of the newest Life Flight Helicopter Medical Service that has just started statewide in Maine..... We are the last of the states in the country to get on-line ....... But better late than never..... They were on the island to give a ground course to us so if the time ever came to use this service we would be ready and trained. It was an informative morning and helpful for them to experience the landing site. They have it programmed into the onboard computer so they can use auto pilot to get here. They have some very sophisticated equipment on the helicopter, like a flying trauma center....
